Vodugu is the Telugu word for Upanayanam, the sacred-thread ceremony in Brahmin tradition. The day begins with the Vighneshvara pooja and the Maatru Bhojanam, the boy's last meal as a child, fed to him by his mother in front of the gathered family. The priest then invests the yajnopavita over the boy's right shoulder and whispers the Gayatri mantra into his ear. From that moment the boy is treated as a brahmachari, a student. He is usually somewhere between seven and sixteen years old; eight is the traditional ideal.
The day usually runs from morning into afternoon. The Maatru Bhojanam is intimate, attended by close family. The thread investiture follows. By the time the rituals close, the extended family and family friends have arrived for the post-investiture lunch, scaling from 50 to 250 plates depending on community size. The meal is strictly sattvic.
